What should you know about small water blisters on feet?

A single blister after tight shoes, long walking, or heat often reflects friction or a burn. Clusters of very small, intensely itchy blisters on the sides or soles can occur with dyshidrotic eczema. Redness after a new product or material may point toward contact dermatitis. Blisters with a painful band-like rash on one side can occur with shingles, while widespread itchy spots with fever may occur with chickenpox. Recent strong sun exposure can also cause blistering sunburn. These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis.

Gently wash the area, pat it dry, and reduce rubbing with roomy shoes and soft, clean socks. Leave an intact blister covered with a protective dressing. Do not deliberately pop it; if it opens, keep the roof of skin in place, cover it, and watch for infection. Avoid suspected new irritants and do not share towels. A clinician may discuss antiviral treatment when a viral cause such as shingles or chickenpox is suspected.

Seek prompt medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, pus, worsening pain, fever, or difficulty walking. Same-day assessment is sensible for a painful one-sided blistering rash, blisters near the eye, or a rapidly spreading eruption. Get individual guidance early if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or have diabetes or reduced foot sensation.
