What should you know about small lump on finger under skin?

The finger has little room for swelling, so even a small lump can feel uncomfortable during gripping or bending. A tender red lump with warmth or drainage can occur with a boil. A firm spot that changes, bleeds, crusts, or does not heal needs assessment; basal cell carcinoma is one condition a clinician may consider among other possibilities. A lump close to a joint, nail, or tendon may need a different evaluation from a lesion confined to the surface. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Protect the finger from pressure, keep the skin clean, and avoid cutting into or squeezing the lump. Remove rings if swelling is developing. Record whether it affects bending, sensation, grip, or nail growth, and photograph visible changes in consistent lighting. A clinician can decide whether observation, drainage, removal, or an intralesional steroid injection fits the findings.

Obtain prompt care for rapidly worsening pain or swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, numbness, blue or pale colour, or loss of finger movement. Arrange a review for a persistent, enlarging, hard, fixed, bleeding, or crusting lump, even when it is not painful.

Ask whether the lump is in the skin or deeper tissue, whether joint or tendon movement is involved, and whether imaging or sampling is useful. Mention trauma, nail changes, drainage, fever, numbness, and how the lump affects daily hand use.
