What should you know about small hives on the arms?

A hive may be pink, skin-coloured, or paler in the centre, with a raised edge. Individual welts often change shape or fade while new ones appear elsewhere. Heat, pressure from clothing, exercise, infection, medicines, or food can trigger an episode, but a trigger is not always found. Use cool compresses, wear loose clothing, and avoid rubbing the arms or taking very hot showers. Keep a brief record of new medicines, foods, illnesses, heat, pressure, and timing. An oral antihistamine may reduce itch when suitable for you; follow the label or a clinician's directions and check before use if you have other conditions or take medicines. A clinician may consider an oral corticosteroid for a severe episode, not as a routine self-treatment.

Call emergency services immediately if hives occur with swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; faintness; or sudden vomiting. These can signal a serious allergic reaction. Arrange medical review when episodes keep recurring, last beyond a short period, leave bruising, or are accompanied by fever or significant pain.
