Small hard round lump under skin: what should you know?

A rounded outline can occur with a blocked pore, cyst-like lesion, inflamed follicle, or boil. Tenderness, warmth, redness, and drainage point toward active inflammation. A smooth lump that moves a little may differ from a hard area attached to the skin or deeper tissue. A basal cell carcinoma can present as a persistent shiny, scaly, crusted, or bleeding skin lesion, though many other conditions can look similar and diagnosis requires an examination.

Check the surface once a day rather than repeatedly touching it. Note whether the lump changes after an infection, injury, bite, or shaving.

Keep the area clean and avoid squeezing, piercing, or trying to flatten it. Protect it from rubbing and take a dated photograph so gradual change is easier to recognise. A warm compress may ease tenderness in a superficial inflamed bump. Make a routine appointment if it remains, returns, enlarges, or becomes more noticeable. A clinician can decide whether observation, medication, drainage, removal, or testing fits the findings.

Seek prompt care for fast growth, spreading redness, increasing heat, pus, or fever. Arrange timely assessment for a fixed lump, persistent ulcer or crust, repeated bleeding, or a lesion that does not heal. Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if severe pain and systemic illness develop.

Ask whether the lump is superficial or deep, what diagnosis best fits its texture and surface, and whether it needs imaging or sampling. Ask what changes to photograph and when to return. If inflammation is diagnosed, ask which treatment is appropriate rather than applying injections or creams without guidance.
