What should you know about small firm lump under skin?

Firmness can come from a blocked skin structure, a scar-like reaction, inflammation or a deeper tissue growth. Some cysts have a central opening or lie just beneath the skin; other lumps move slightly when touched, while deeper or tethered lesions move less. A firm feel alone cannot distinguish a harmless lump from one needing investigation. A clinician may inspect the overlying skin and gently examine the borders, depth and mobility.

Arrange prompt care if the lump is rapidly enlarging, firmly fixed, bleeding, ulcerated, increasingly painful, or surrounded by spreading redness or warmth. Fever, pus, red streaking, or feeling very unwell raises the urgency because infection may need treatment. A new lump after an injury can still merit review if it does not settle or continues to change.
