Small bumps under the skin of the neck

Bumps around hairs may be folliculitis, especially after shaving, friction, or sweating. Tiny rough bumps can fit keratosis pilaris, while clusters after heat and perspiration may be heat rash. A firm surface cyst can resemble milia, and flat-topped or darker itchy bumps can occur with lichen planus.

A bump that feels deeper, is under the skin rather than on its surface, or sits near the jaw or side of the neck deserves an examination because its cause cannot be identified reliably from appearance alone.

Clean gently, keep the area dry after exercise, and avoid tight collars, necklaces, fragranced products, and close shaving until the skin settles. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press the bumps. Record when they appeared and whether they move, drain, or change.

A clinician may recommend an antihistamine treatment when itching or an allergic pattern is present. Cryotherapy is a possible lesion-removal option for selected surface lesions, but it is not suitable for every under-skin lump.

Arrange a review if a bump persists, enlarges, becomes hard or fixed, repeatedly drains, or is associated with unexplained weight change or night sweats. Seek prompt care for fever, severe pain, spreading redness, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Is this bump in the skin, a hair follicle, or deeper tissue? Could shaving, friction, heat, or a medicine be contributing? Would examination, imaging, a swab, or removal help clarify the diagnosis?
