Small bump under the penile shaft skin: what to know

A bump near a hair-bearing area can follow follicle irritation, shaving, or friction. A smooth, pale, firm surface may fit a different benign skin growth, while itching, scale, clustered lesions, sores, or discharge raise other possibilities. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause genital changes, and appearance alone cannot confirm or exclude one. Do not squeeze, pierce, or scrape the bump.

Wash gently with water or a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid new products, vigorous rubbing, and shaving over the area. If a sexually transmitted infection is possible, avoid sexual contact or use protection until assessed. Note when the bump appeared, whether it is changing, and whether pain, itch, discharge, or urinary symptoms accompany it.

Arrange a clinician or sexual-health review for a new, persistent, enlarging, painful, ulcerated, clustered, or bleeding bump. Seek urgent care for severe swelling, inability to pass urine, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or intense pain. Prompt assessment is especially sensible after a new sexual exposure or when a partner has symptoms.
