Small Blisters on Hands and Feet: What to Know

Small blisters on the hands and feet are often itchy fluid-filled spots, but their cause depends on their pattern, triggers, and surrounding skin. Tiny blisters deep in the sides of fingers, palms, or soles can occur with dyshidrotic eczema. Friction, contact irritation, infection, and other rashes can look similar.

Dyshidrotic eczema may cause clusters of very small, deep-seated blisters followed by peeling, dryness, or cracks. Sweat, heat, stress, and contact with irritants may contribute for some people. Blisters confined to a pressure area after rubbing suggest friction instead. The appearance, itch, pain, recurrence, and any exposure to new products help a clinician identify the cause.

Keep the area cool and dry, wash gently, and apply a plain moisturiser after washing. Protect hands from detergents and cleaning chemicals with suitable gloves, and choose breathable footwear. Do not deliberately pop blisters; cover broken skin with a clean dressing. A prescribed topical corticosteroid may calm eczema inflammation. Avoid using someone else’s cream, especially if infection is possible.

Get medical advice if blisters are painful, rapidly spreading, filled with pus, surrounded by increasing redness, or accompanied by fever. Prompt assessment is also sensible when walking or using the hands becomes difficult, the skin repeatedly cracks, or the rash follows a new medicine. Seek urgent care for widespread blistering, mouth or eye involvement, or breathing difficulty.
