What should you know about slow trickle water breaking?

Some people notice wet underwear, a warm trickle when standing or moving, or repeated dampness after wiping. Amniotic fluid may be clear or pale and can continue to leak. Discharge and urine can look or feel similar, so colour and sensation cannot confirm the cause.

A possible rupture of membranes needs professional assessment because the pregnancy stage, labour symptoms, fetal movement, and signs of infection all affect what happens next. Preterm labour is one concern when the waters break before labour and earlier in pregnancy.

Wear a clean pad, record when the wetness began, and note its colour and smell. Call your maternity unit or obstetric team for instructions. Do not use a tampon, have penetrative sex, or put products into the vagina while waiting for advice. Follow directions about attending the hospital and monitoring contractions or fetal movement.

Seek urgent care for reduced fetal movement, regular contractions, strong or persistent pain, fresh bleeding, fever, chills, feeling unwell, or green, brown, or foul-smelling fluid. If the fluid is blood-stained or you feel faint, do not wait to see whether the trickle continues.
