What should you know about a slow leak water break?

Amniotic fluid can escape as a damp feeling, repeated trickle, or a small gush rather than one dramatic release. It is often clear or pale, but appearance alone cannot confirm the source. Vaginal discharge and urine leakage can feel similar, especially later in pregnancy. A clinician can examine you and use appropriate tests to check whether the fluid is amniotic fluid.

If the membranes rupture before labour, the timing of pregnancy affects the assessment and plan. Earlier rupture can be associated with preterm labour, which is why a possible leak should not be watched at home without advice.

Put on a clean sanitary pad, note the fluid colour, smell, and when it started, and call your maternity unit or obstetric team. Do not use tampons or put anything into the vagina until you have received advice. Follow the team’s instructions about examination, monitoring, and whether you should go straight to hospital. Keep track of contractions and your baby’s usual movements.

Seek urgent maternity care for green or brown fluid, fresh bleeding, fever or feeling unwell, worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions, reduced fetal movement, or fluid with an unpleasant smell. If you are unsure whether the wetness is fluid from the waters, call anyway; uncertainty is a reason for assessment, not reassurance.

Ask how the fluid will be checked, whether you need monitoring for infection or contractions, what signs should bring you back immediately, and how the possible rupture changes care at your stage of pregnancy.
