Slight swelling in the feet: what to know

Pregnancy can increase fluid in the body and pressure in the veins returning blood from the legs. Swelling is often more noticeable after standing, in warm weather, or later in the day, and may affect both feet. A sudden increase, swelling of the hands or face, severe headache, vision changes, pain under the ribs, or feeling unwell can signal pre-eclampsia, which needs medical assessment.

Mention new swelling at your antenatal appointment and keep track of whether it is even on both sides or changes quickly. Rest with your legs raised, avoid standing for long periods, wear comfortable shoes, and move your ankles gently. Keep taking prescribed medicines and attend blood-pressure and urine checks. Do not start water tablets or supplements for swelling unless your maternity team recommends them.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for sudden swelling, swelling of the face or hands, severe headache, visual disturbance, upper-abdominal pain, breathlessness, or feeling unwell. One-sided leg swelling with pain, warmth, or redness also needs prompt assessment.
