Slight spotting after sex: what to know

Bleeding after sex can occur when vaginal tissue is dry or rubbed, or when the cervix is sensitive or inflamed. Infections such as chlamydia may cause bleeding with discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when passing urine. Polyps and fibroids can also bleed. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer are less common causes, but bleeding after sex is a symptom that warrants evaluation; it does not by itself show that either condition is present.

Note the amount and colour of blood, whether it happens every time, the timing in relation to sex, and any pain, discharge, odour, or urinary symptoms. Book a GP or sexual-health appointment if the bleeding recurs, has no clear explanation, or occurs after menopause. Testing may include a pelvic examination, infection testing, and review of cervical screening history.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. Seek prompt review for bleeding during pregnancy, bleeding after menopause, or bleeding accompanied by unusual discharge or persistent pain.

Ask whether you need infection tests or an examination of the cervix, whether screening is up to date, and what follow-up is needed if the spotting returns.
