Skin Tag Removal Near the Eye

A skin tag near the eye should be assessed and removed by a clinician who can protect the eyelid, eye surface, and vision during treatment. Do not cut, freeze, burn, or apply skin-tag products close to the eye, even if the growth appears small.

Eyelid skin is thin and the eye is easily injured by chemicals, sharp tools, heat, or particles. A small eyelid growth may also be a wart, cyst, blocked gland, mole, or another lesion rather than a skin tag. The clinician will check its attachment, surface, colour, and position in relation to the lashes and eyelid edge. Removal may be deferred or a specialist opinion arranged if the diagnosis is unclear.

Book an examination with a dermatologist, ophthalmologist, or clinician experienced with lesions around the eye. Tell them about contact lenses, eye disease, medicines that affect bleeding, and previous eyelid procedures. Treatment may involve careful snip removal or another clinic-based method with eye protection and local anaesthetic when suitable. Keep cosmetics and contact lenses away from a healing area according to the aftercare advice, and never pull at a scab.

Get urgent medical help if removal is followed by vision change, severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, increasing swelling, pus, or difficulty opening the eye. Prompt assessment is also needed for a growth that bleeds repeatedly, forms an ulcer, changes quickly, or distorts the eyelid edge. These findings need more than routine cosmetic treatment.

Ask who should perform the removal, how the eye will be shielded, whether the tissue should be examined, how long to avoid eye makeup, and which symptoms require same-day review.
