Skin Tag on the Anus: Is Home Removal Safe?

An anal skin tag is a flap of external skin that may remain after irritation or a healed fissure or haemorrhoid. It can feel soft and may become uncomfortable with wiping, sweating or bowel movements. A haemorrhoid, wart, abscess, fissure or other anal lesion can look or feel similar, and treatment differs between them.

A growth that is painful, inflamed or bleeding should not be assumed to be a simple skin tag. A clinician can inspect the external skin and decide whether further examination is needed.

Do not cut, burn, tie off or apply acids, wart treatments or unprescribed creams. The area can bleed and is exposed to bacteria, while pain may make wound care difficult. Wash gently with water, pat dry, avoid vigorous wiping, and address constipation with fluids and fibre if those measures suit you.

Arrange prompt care for persistent bleeding, increasing pain, pus, fever, spreading redness, a hard or rapidly enlarging lump, or a sore that does not heal. Heavy bleeding, severe pain with swelling, or difficulty passing stool needs urgent assessment.
