Skin scraping for fungal culture

A clinician may suggest culture when a scaly, itchy, cracked, or discoloured area could be caused by a fungus but looks similar to another skin condition. Scale is collected from the active edge or another affected surface and sent to a laboratory. Culture can help identify fungal growth, although a negative result does not always settle the diagnosis if the sample is small or treatment has already reduced the organism.

Follow the clinic’s instructions about creams, powders, and antifungal medicines before the appointment; do not stop a prescribed medicine without checking first. Keep the area clean and tell the clinician about recent treatment. Sampling usually causes brief scratching or mild tenderness, and the area should be kept as directed afterwards. Results may take time because the laboratory needs to observe whether growth develops. Treatment, such as Oral Antifungal Treatment, depends on the result and the body site.

Seek review if the sampled area becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, painful, or starts draining. Contact the clinic if the rash spreads, involves the eyes or mouth, or does not improve as expected while results are pending.

Ask which medicines or products to pause, when the culture result should be available, what a negative result would mean, and whether another test may be needed.
