Skin Reaction to Antibiotics: What to Know

A rash may appear as red or raised patches, small spots, hives, itching, or skin that feels warm. It can begin soon after a dose or later during the course. Some rashes are caused by the infection being treated rather than the medicine, which is why the appearance and timing matter. A reaction can occur with tablets, liquids, injections, or a medicine applied to the skin.

Write down the antibiotic name, dose, start date, and when the skin change began. Photograph the rash if it changes quickly. Contact the prescriber or a pharmacist for personalised advice before continuing, stopping, or changing treatment; do not share leftover antibiotics. Mention any previous medicine reactions and every other medicine you take. Antibiotics prescribed for cellulitis, acute bronchitis, or another infection may need a carefully chosen alternative if a reaction is suspected.

Get emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; faintness; a rapidly spreading rash; blistering or peeling skin; painful skin; sores in the mouth or eyes; or fever with a severe rash. These signs can signal a serious reaction and should not be watched at home. If symptoms are milder but persistent, arrange prompt clinical review.
