Skin rashes that may pass from dogs to humans

Some fungal infections can spread through infected animals or contaminated items and may form an expanding, scaly patch. Mites can cause intense itching and may affect more than one household member, while contact dermatitis can follow saliva, shampoo, bedding, or flea products. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash, intertrigo, or a drug rash may occur at the same time by coincidence and are not necessarily transmitted by a dog.

Wash hands after touching an irritated area, avoid sharing towels or bedding, and keep the rash covered when practical. Do not apply veterinary medicines to human skin. Arrange medical advice for a new spreading, scaly, or very itchy rash, and tell the clinician about animal contact, household symptoms, recent products, and any dog with hair loss or skin lesions. Your veterinarian should assess the dog separately.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, or a rash near the eyes. Get emergency help for facial swelling, wheezing, trouble breathing, or faintness after contact. Children, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity should seek advice early for a persistent or worsening rash.

Ask whether the pattern suggests ringworm, scabies, contact dermatitis, or another condition; whether skin testing is needed; and how to reduce household spread while the dog and home environment are being assessed.
