Skin rashes caused by heat

Sweat trapped beneath the surface can produce tiny clear, red, or skin-coloured bumps with stinging or itching. The rash often appears on the neck, chest, back, or folds beneath clothing, especially after hot weather, exercise, fever, or prolonged covering. Heat rash is different from every cause of a skin rash, so a persistent or unusual pattern deserves an examination.

Move to a cooler place, loosen or remove damp clothing, and rinse with lukewarm water. Pat dry rather than rubbing. Wear light, breathable layers and take breaks from heat and exercise while the skin settles. Avoid thick oily products that may further block sweat ducts. An emollient therapy may help dryness, while a clinician may advise a short course of topical corticosteroids for marked inflammation.

Seek medical advice when the rash lasts despite cooling, keeps returning, becomes painful, develops pus, or is accompanied by fever or spreading warmth. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, or inability to cool down, because those symptoms can indicate heat illness rather than a simple rash.
