Skin rash in typhoid fever: what to know

Typhoid fever is an infection that can cause sustained fever, headache, tiredness, abdominal discomfort and changes in bowel habits. A faint, flat rash may appear on the trunk in some cases, but many illnesses can produce spots or flushing. The appearance, timing, travel or food exposure and accompanying symptoms all matter. Diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting or reduced drinking can lead to dehydration, which may cause dizziness, dry mouth and weakness.

Seek medical assessment promptly if typhoid fever is possible, especially after travel or exposure to unsafe food or water. Tell the clinician when the fever began, where you travelled, what you ate or drank, and whether you have taken antibiotics. Drink frequent small amounts if you can keep fluids down, rest, wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others until a clinician gives clearance. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, very little urine, blood in the stool, breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening illness. A rash with blistering, skin peeling, facial swelling or severe weakness also requires urgent review. Children, older adults and people with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment when fever and a rash occur together.
