Skin Rash From Water With Bacteria: What You Should Know

A rash after swimming, bathing, or contact with untreated water may be red, itchy, tender, or dotted with bumps. Bacteria can enter through cuts, eczema, shaving irritation, or scratched skin, but not every rash after water exposure is an infection. Chemical irritation, heat, Contact Dermatitis, and other causes can look similar. Infection becomes more concerning when redness expands, the area feels hot and painful, or drainage and fever develop.

Rinse the area with clean running water, wash gently, and pat dry. Cover cuts with a clean dressing and avoid swimming or soaking until broken skin has healed. Do not squeeze bumps or share towels, razors, or dressings. Keep a note of where the exposure occurred and when the rash began. A clinician may need to examine the skin and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate; avoid using leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked swelling, fever with chills, red streaks, confusion, or feeling very unwell. Get prompt medical advice for pus, blisters, blackened skin, or a wound near the eye. Arrange an assessment if the rash is not settling, especially if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system.
