What should you know about skin painful to touch?

Tender skin can occur before a visible mark appears. A warm, red, swollen area may fit cellulitis; a sore, pus-filled bump may be a boil or abscess. Repeated painful lumps in the armpits, groin, or under the breasts can occur with hidradenitis suppurativa. Burning or hypersensitivity on one side of the body, followed by grouped blisters, can occur with shingles. Friction, a minor injury, an ingrown nail, or irritated nerves can also make normal-looking skin sore.

Look at the area in good light and note its size, warmth, colour, swelling, blisters, drainage, and tenderness. Keep the skin clean, avoid rubbing or squeezing it, and choose loose clothing if friction is involved. A cool, covered compress may soothe irritation. Do not apply leftover antibiotics, steroid creams, or strong antiseptics without advice. A clinician can decide whether you need examination, testing, medication, or a procedure such as abscess drainage.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain is worsening, redness is spreading, the area is hot or swollen, pus is present, or a blistering band appears. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly changing skin, fever, confusion, faintness, or swelling near the eye. Earlier assessment is sensible if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, or difficulty feeling the affected area.
