Why skin looks dry and older

When the outer barrier loses water and oils, skin can feel tight and look less smooth. Fine lines may appear more visible because rough flakes interrupt the surface. Sun exposure, smoking, repeated hot showers, harsh cleansing and irritating cosmetics can all contribute to a weathered-looking texture.

Asteatotic eczema may cause fine cracks and a dry, patterned surface. Atopic dermatitis may bring itch and recurring redness, while psoriasis can create thicker, sharply outlined scale. These conditions are not diagnosed from an older-looking appearance alone.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser and a rich fragrance-free moisturiser. Apply it immediately after bathing and repeat on areas that feel tight. Use broad-spectrum sun protection on exposed skin and avoid tanning, rough brushes and frequent product changes.

Emollient therapy can reduce water loss and soften rough scale. Choose a texture you will use consistently: an ointment for very dry areas, or a cream when a lighter feel encourages regular application. Introduce retinoids or exfoliating products only with suitable professional advice if the barrier is irritated.

Arrange a review when dryness continues after a careful moisturising routine, or when itch, redness, fissures, pain, bleeding or thick scale develops. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading inflammation, increasing warmth, pus or severe discomfort.
