Short answer

A skin growth on the arm may come from several conditions, so its appearance, changes, and symptoms should be assessed rather than diagnosed at home.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What an arm growth may be

An arm growth can be a cyst, skin tag, wart, inflamed follicle, scar, or other benign lump. A boil is more likely to be tender, red, warm, and filled with pus. Some lesions, including Basal Cell Carcinoma, can persist, crust, bleed, or change, but an arm growth does not by itself establish cancer.

A clinician will consider whether the growth is on the surface or beneath it, how long it has been present, and whether it is changing in size, shape, colour, texture, or sensation. A photograph and brief timeline can help you describe those changes accurately.

What to do now

Do not squeeze, scratch, pierce, or repeatedly scrape the growth. Wash the skin gently, cover it if clothing rubs against it, and use sun protection on exposed skin. Arrange a medical assessment if it remains, returns, becomes irritated, or is difficult to identify.

Record when you noticed it and whether it bleeds, crusts, itches, hurts, drains, or changes. A doctor may monitor it, treat inflammation, or recommend a sample or removal when the diagnosis is uncertain. Treatment should follow the diagnosis rather than the location alone.

When to seek care

Book prompt review for a growth that changes quickly, repeatedly bleeds or crusts, fails to heal, becomes increasingly painful, or develops spreading redness or drainage. Seek urgent help if there is heavy bleeding, severe swelling, fever with a painful lump, or red streaking up the arm. These signs indicate the need for timely assessment, not a specific diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the growth is superficial or deeper, what features make a biopsy or removal useful, and how to protect it while waiting. If it is inflamed, ask whether a Steroid Injection Into The Skin is suitable and what alternatives exist.

Questions people ask

Does a lump on the arm usually mean cancer?

No. Arm lumps have many possible causes, including benign ones, but a persistent or changing lesion should be checked rather than guessed at.

What should I photograph?

Use clear images in consistent lighting and include a nearby scale only if it does not touch or irritate the lesion; bring them to your appointment with the date first noticed.
