What should you know about skin dry and itchy during pregnancy?

Short answer
Dry, itchy skin during pregnancy is common, but intense, widespread or persistent itching should be assessed by a clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why pregnancy can change skin
Hormonal shifts, stretching skin and changes in the skin barrier can increase tightness, dryness and itch, especially on the abdomen, breasts, arms and legs. Heat, sweat, fragranced products and frequent hot showers may add irritation. Asteatotic eczema or atopic dermatitis can also cause dry, itchy areas, while psoriasis may flare or change during pregnancy. The pattern, timing and presence of a rash help a clinician narrow the cause. Itching without a visible rash still deserves attention when it is strong or affects sleep.
Comfort measures
Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and take short, lukewarm showers. Apply an emollient therapy product soon after bathing, while the skin is still slightly damp, and reapply when tightness returns. Choose loose, breathable clothing, keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Before using medicated creams, antihistamines, essential oils or herbal products, check with your maternity clinician; pregnancy changes which treatments are suitable and how they should be used.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or worsening itch, itch on the palms or soles, itching that is worse at night, or itch with a new widespread rash. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, fever, yellowing of the skin or feeling very unwell. A clinician can decide whether testing or a pregnancy-appropriate treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pattern fit ordinary pregnancy-related dryness? Should I use an emollient therapy product or another treatment? Which ingredients should I avoid? Do I need an examination or tests because the itching is intense, nocturnal or on my palms and soles?

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy make eczema itchier?
Yes. Hormonal and barrier changes may aggravate atopic dermatitis or asteatotic eczema, so treatment should be tailored to pregnancy.
Is every itchy pregnancy rash harmless?
No. Severe, widespread or night-time itching needs clinical assessment, even when the skin looks normal.
