What should you know about skin discoloration tinea versicolor?

The patches often appear on the chest, back, shoulders or neck. They may be pale, tan, pink or brown and can become easier to see after surrounding skin tans. A fine powdery scale may be more noticeable when the area is gently rubbed. Mild itch can occur, but some people notice only the colour change. The condition is superficial and is not the same as a deep fungal infection. Similar-looking dark patches, white patches, rash or scaling can have other causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A clinician may recommend a topical antifungal treatment, medicated shampoo treatment used on affected skin, or oral antifungal treatment when the pattern is extensive or keeps returning. Follow the product directions and avoid applying treatment to eyes or broken skin. Keep the area dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and do not share towels. Treatment controls the yeast, but the skin colour may take time to even out after the scale has cleared. Repeated episodes deserve a review so the diagnosis and prevention plan can be checked.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if patches are spreading, painful, very itchy, inflamed, oozing or changing quickly. Seek advice if an over-the-counter product irritates your skin, if the diagnosis is uncertain, or if discolouration persists after treatment. Prompt review is also sensible when a rash affects the face or an area near the eyes, because several conditions can look alike there.
