Skin Damage From Chemical Peel: What to Know

Mild redness, warmth, tightness, dryness and flaking can be part of a planned response, depending on the peel depth and the product used. Damage is more concerning when pain is strong or increasing, swelling is marked, blisters or open areas appear, or the skin becomes very dark, pale or uneven after the initial reaction. Crusting, pus, spreading redness or fever can suggest infection. A prolonged change in texture or colour may follow inflammation, particularly in skin that tends to develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The risk can be affected by peel strength, contact time, skin sensitivity, recent sun exposure, active eczema or infection, and use of irritating products around the appointment. Home application of a professional-strength peel can make the exposure difficult to control. A peel intended to improve acne, sun-damaged skin, sun spots or melasma still needs careful selection and aftercare.

Stop the peel and rinse gently with cool or lukewarm water if product may still be on the skin, following the treating clinician’s instructions. Do not scrub, peel flakes, use acids, retinoids, fragranced products or other exfoliants on the area until you have been advised that the barrier has recovered. Use the bland cleanser, moisturiser and sun protection recommended for your skin; avoid picking or covering open skin with non-medical products. Contact the clinic that performed the peel and describe the timing, product, strength if known, symptoms and any products used afterward. A clinician may need to examine the area before recommending treatment.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, facial swelling that affects the eyes or breathing, extensive blistering, deep open or grey-looking skin, heavy discharge, or redness that is spreading. Fever, feeling very unwell, or eye pain and vision changes also warrant urgent assessment. If symptoms are milder but are not settling, arrange a dermatology review rather than applying another treatment yourself. Prompt assessment can help distinguish expected peeling from a chemical burn, infection or a reaction that may scar or alter pigmentation.

Ask which reaction is expected for the exact peel used, whether the area shows a burn or infection, which products should be stopped, how to protect healing skin from sunlight, and when it is safe to restart active ingredients or plan another procedure. Bring the product name, photographs showing how the reaction changed, and a list of medicines and skincare products.
