Skin care for dull, aging skin

A less even surface can scatter light differently when skin is dry, rough or affected by slower shedding. Cumulative ultraviolet exposure can add uneven colour, fine lines and texture changes; this is described as [Sun-Damaged Skin](/conditions/photoaging/). Dullness can also reflect irritation, dehydration or a change in a longstanding mark, so appearance alone cannot identify its cause.

Cleanse gently, apply a moisturiser suited to your skin, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas each morning. Add active products gradually rather than combining several exfoliants. Stop an irritating product if burning, marked redness or peeling develops. Have a clinician examine a new or changing pigmented mark, bleeding or crusting area, persistent scale, or a sore that does not heal. Seek advice if dullness comes with significant itch, pain, inflammation or sudden widespread change.
