Skin care for a dry, flaky face

Short answer
For a dry, flaky face, use a gentle cleanser, apply a fragrance-free moisturiser while skin is slightly damp, and arrange medical advice if the flaking is persistent, inflamed or painful.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful moisturiser
- A fragrance-free cream or ointment applied to slightly damp skin
- Avoid
- Scrubs, hot water and products that sting or contain strong fragrance
- Get assessed
- For persistent, spreading, inflamed, painful or infected-looking flaking
What dry facial skin can mean
Flaking usually reflects a weakened skin barrier: the outer layer is losing moisture and shedding fine scales. Cold or dry air, hot water, over-cleansing, scrubs and fragranced products can aggravate it. Dryness may also occur with irritation or a skin condition, especially when there is marked itch, redness, cracking, a sharply outlined rash or scale in other areas.
A dry, flaky face alone does not identify the cause. A clinician may consider conditions such as asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis or psoriasis when the pattern, symptoms and examination fit.
What you can do
Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive product; avoid rubbing the flakes away. Pat rather than scrub, then smooth on a fragrance-free cream or ointment while the face is still slightly damp. Reapply when the skin feels tight, and keep the rest of the routine simple until the barrier settles.
Pause exfoliating acids, facial scrubs, retinoids and strongly scented products if they sting or worsen scaling. Introduce products one at a time after the skin is comfortable. Do not peel loose skin, and use sun protection because irritated skin can be more reactive.
When to seek care
Arrange a dermatology or primary-care review when flaking keeps returning, spreads, or does not improve with gentle care, or when itch and redness interfere with sleep or daily activities. Seek prompt advice for painful cracks, oozing, crusting, swelling, blisters, pus, fever, or involvement close to the eyes. Sudden facial swelling or trouble breathing needs emergency help.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern of rash is present, whether a product or treatment could be irritating your skin, and which moisturiser texture suits your face. You can also ask whether the scaling suggests eczema, psoriasis or another condition, how long to try the recommended routine, and which symptoms should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Should you exfoliate a flaky face?
Avoid scrubbing or peeling the flakes. Exfoliating products can further irritate a weakened skin barrier, so return to them only if a clinician advises and your skin is comfortable.
When might facial flaking be more than simple dryness?
A recurring or spreading rash, strong itch, marked redness, pain, cracking, oozing or scale elsewhere can point to irritation or a skin condition that needs assessment.
