What should you know about skin blisters on hands?

Small, deep-seated, very itchy blisters on the palms or sides of the fingers are a common presentation of dyshidrotic eczema. A rash after soap, gloves, chemicals, or another new exposure can be a presentation of contact dermatitis. Friction from tools, sport, or repeated rubbing may create a tender, clear blister. A painful grouped rash on one side of the hand can occur with shingles, while widespread blisters with fever can occur with chickenpox. Sunburn or heat can also damage the upper skin and cause fluid-filled areas. The location alone cannot identify the cause.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and cover the area with a clean non-stick dressing. Do not deliberately burst the blister: its roof helps shield the raw skin underneath. Reduce rubbing and avoid the suspected irritant; wear protective gloves for wet or chemical work, with a breathable layer beneath when appropriate. Keep the hands moisturised around, rather than aggressively over, an open area. If a blister opens, leave the loose skin in place when it is clean, rinse gently, and replace the dressing. Arrange prompt assessment for spreading redness, warmth, pus, increasing pain, red streaks, fever, or a wound that is not settling. Seek urgent care for rapidly developing blisters, severe swelling, extensive burns, breathing difficulty, or blisters involving the eyes or mouth. Recurrent hand blisters, blisters without an obvious trigger, or symptoms that interfere with work deserve a clinician’s review.
