What should you know about skin abscess antibiotic choice?

An abscess is a pocket of infected material under the skin. It can cause a tender lump, warmth, redness, and sometimes drainage or fever. Antibiotics may be considered when infection is spreading, illness is significant, the abscess is in a higher-risk area, or a person has factors that affect healing. A sealed pocket may not improve with tablets alone, so a clinician may recommend drainage and sometimes a sample to guide treatment.

Arrange an assessment rather than sharing leftover antibiotics or squeezing the lump. Keep the area clean and covered if it is draining, wash your hands after touching it, and do not pierce it yourself. Take a prescribed course exactly as directed and report a previous antibiotic reaction, pregnancy, kidney problems, or medicines that could interact.

Seek urgent medical help for fever, confusion, faintness, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, red streaks, or an abscess near the eye, nose, spine, or genitals. Prompt review is also needed when a lump is enlarging, recurrent, or not improving after treatment.
