What should you know about silent kidney stones?

A stone can be found incidentally during imaging or remain unnoticed while urine drains freely. If it moves into a ureter, it may cause waves of Flank Pain or Abdominal Pain, nausea, blood in urine, Painful Urination, or Difficulty Passing Urine. A blocked system is more concerning when fever or chills are present. Dehydration can contribute to concentrated urine, although stones have several possible causes.

If imaging found a stone, ask about its location, size, and follow-up. Drink fluids according to clinical advice, especially if kidney, heart, or fluid restrictions apply. Do not start supplements or stone medicines without guidance. A GP Consultation can review symptoms and arrange an Abdominal Ultrasound or other investigation when appropriate.

Seek urgent help for severe or persistent flank or abdominal pain, fever, chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, inability to pass urine, or feeling faint. Pain with fever can indicate infection behind a blockage and should not wait for a routine appointment. Blood in urine or painful urination also merits prompt advice.
