Signs that pneumonia is improving with antibiotics

When antibiotics are treating the cause, the overall illness may begin to ease, but the change is not always immediate. Fever and chills may settle, breathing may require less effort, and appetite or strength may return. Cough and phlegm can continue because inflamed airways often recover more slowly than the infection itself.

Antibiotics do not treat every cause of pneumonia. A clinician may need to reconsider the diagnosis if symptoms do not improve, worsen, or return. Other illnesses, including acute bronchitis, can also cause cough and chest symptoms, so do not change treatment based on symptoms alone.

Take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed and complete the planned course unless the prescriber tells you to stop. Rest, drink fluids if suitable for you, and increase activity slowly. Note fever, breathing comfort, energy, and new symptoms. Report troublesome diarrhoea, a widespread rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty after a dose, as these may indicate a medicine reaction.

Seek prompt review if fever persists or returns, breathing becomes harder, chest pain increases, confusion appears, or you cannot keep fluids down. Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, facial swelling, or sudden collapse. Do not wait for the next dose when a severe reaction or rapid deterioration is occurring.

Ask what improvement should be expected for your diagnosis, when a review is needed, and whether follow-up testing is planned. Confirm how to take each dose, what to do if one is missed, and which side effects require stopping and urgent advice.
