Signs of Zika in pregnancy

Zika infection can cause few symptoms or none at all. When symptoms occur, they often resemble other mosquito-borne or viral illnesses. The combination of rash, red eyes, joint pain, and fever can raise the question of Zika, but symptoms cannot confirm it. Recent travel or residence in an area where Zika occurs, mosquito bites, or sexual exposure may be relevant even when the pregnant person feels well.

Pregnancy makes this concern worth discussing promptly because infection during pregnancy can affect the developing baby. Do not assume that a rash has a harmless cause, and do not delay advice while waiting for symptoms to become more obvious.

Contact a maternity clinician or GP and explain where and when exposure may have occurred, whether symptoms are present, and whether a sexual partner has travelled. Use mosquito-bite prevention measures such as covered clothing, screens, and an appropriate repellent according to local advice.
