Signs of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Eyes

Some people with Rheumatoid Arthritis develop reduced tear comfort, while inflammation can involve the outer coat of the eye or deeper tissues. A red, painful eye or new sensitivity to light is different from simple tiredness and should not be dismissed. Eye symptoms can occur with or without hand and joint symptoms such as Finger Stiffness, Hand Swelling, Joint Pain or Morning Joint Stiffness. Several eye conditions can look similar, so an examination is needed to identify the cause.

Contact your rheumatology or primary-care team about persistent dryness, recurrent redness or changes in vision, and arrange an eye examination when advised. Keep a record of which eye is affected, whether pain or light sensitivity is present, and whether symptoms began after a medicine change. Do not use leftover steroid eye drops without professional advice. Your clinician may coordinate eye care with arthritis treatment, including Anti-Inflammatory Medication when appropriate.

Seek same-day eye or emergency care for sudden vision loss, a painful red eye, marked light sensitivity, a new blind spot, severe headache with visual symptoms, or rapidly worsening blurred vision. Remove contact lenses if they are uncomfortable and avoid driving when vision is impaired. Prompt assessment helps protect sight and does not depend on whether your other joints are currently painful.
