Short answer

Possible rhabdomyolysis signs include unusually severe muscle pain, swelling, weakness and dark tea-coloured urine after muscle injury or intense exertion.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What rhabdomyolysis means

Rhabdomyolysis happens when damaged muscle releases substances into the bloodstream. It may follow strenuous exercise, heat exposure, a crush injury, prolonged pressure on a muscle, a seizure or another medical trigger. Ordinary Muscle Soreness After Exercise tends to ease as the body recovers; rhabdomyolysis is more concerning when pain is extreme or out of proportion, swelling is prominent, movement is difficult, or weakness is increasing. A person may have few symptoms, so appearance alone cannot confirm or exclude it.

What to do now

Stop strenuous activity and seek prompt medical assessment if these features appear, particularly after an unusually hard workout, heat exposure or injury. Do not attempt to train through severe pain or rely on supplements or home remedies. Tell the clinician what activity, medicines, substances or injury came before the symptoms and when urine changes began. Assessment commonly includes examination and blood and urine tests; treatment decisions depend on the findings and hydration needs.

When to seek urgent care

Go to an emergency department for dark or very reduced urine, severe muscle swelling, worsening weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty or chest symptoms. Urgent care is also appropriate when severe muscle pain follows a major injury or heat illness. Kidney problems and changes in body salts can develop even when pain seems localised, so do not wait for every sign to appear.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be rhabdomyolysis or ordinary post-exercise soreness? Do I need blood or urine testing? Which medicines, supplements or activities could have contributed? When can I safely return to exercise, and which symptoms mean I should return immediately?

Questions people ask

Is muscle soreness after exercise always rhabdomyolysis?

No. Rhabdomyolysis is more concerning when soreness is unusually severe or comes with swelling, weakness or dark urine.

Can rhabdomyolysis happen without dark urine?

Yes. Urine colour is only one possible sign, so severe pain, swelling or weakness still warrants prompt assessment.
