Signs of missed miscarriage without bleeding

It is often discovered during a routine appointment when development or cardiac activity does not match expectations.

Pregnancy symptoms can continue for a time because hormone levels do not change immediately. A later scan may also show that dates were estimated differently, especially when ovulation was irregular. For that reason, clinicians may repeat an ultrasound or blood test before confirming a loss.

A missed miscarriage is not caused by something you did in ordinary daily life. If the diagnosis is confirmed, a clinician will explain options and check for symptoms that could indicate infection or another complication.

Contact your maternity provider for an appointment rather than relying on the presence or absence of bleeding. Bring the date of your last period, earlier scan information and your medicines. Ask how the diagnosis will be confirmed and what follow-up is planned if the first scan is inconclusive.

Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, fainting or significant dizziness. These symptoms need prompt assessment. If you feel unsafe or suddenly very unwell, use emergency services even without vaginal bleeding.

Ask whether the scan findings are conclusive, whether a repeat scan or blood test is needed, and how long confirmation may take. If loss is confirmed, discuss waiting, medical management or surgical management, pain relief, warning signs and emotional support.
