Signs of Lichen Planus

The bumps may develop on the wrists, ankles, lower back, or legs and can merge into rougher patches. Itching may be strong, and rubbing can leave darker or lighter marks after the active rash settles. Lichen planus can also affect the mouth, where white lacy lines, soreness, or shallow erosions may occur. Nail changes or scalp involvement are possible. These findings overlap with other rashes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the condition; a dermatologist may examine the skin and mouth and decide whether further testing is needed.

Record when the bumps began, where they started, how itchy they are, and whether a new medicine, dental material, or illness preceded them. Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care and avoid picking or vigorous scrubbing. Arrange a dermatology review for a persistent, spreading, or very itchy eruption, especially when the mouth, eyes, genitals, scalp, or nails are involved. Treatment may include Topical Corticosteroids; more extensive disease may call for Oral Corticosteroid Treatment under supervision.

Seek urgent care for eye pain or vision changes, difficulty swallowing, rapidly worsening mouth sores, inability to drink, or extensive blistering or peeling. Contact a clinician soon if lesions become painful, ooze, crust, or show signs of infection, or if new medicine exposure is followed by a widespread rash or facial swelling. Prompt assessment helps distinguish lichen planus from reactions and infections that need different care.
