Signs of High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is carried in the blood and is used for normal body functions, but an unhealthy balance can contribute to fatty deposits inside artery walls. This process is often silent. Rare visible clues, such as firm yellowish deposits around the eyes or over tendons, can occur in some inherited forms and need clinical assessment. Symptoms such as chest pressure, leg pain while walking, or sudden weakness are not direct signs of cholesterol itself; they may reflect artery disease and require attention.

Arrange a cholesterol test through a clinician, who can interpret the result alongside blood pressure, diabetes risk, family history, smoking, age, and previous vascular problems. Management may include improving food choices, regular activity suited to your health, weight management where appropriate, and medicines such as statins when overall risk supports them. Do not stop prescribed treatment without discussing side effects or concerns with the prescriber.

Call emergency services for chest pressure that does not settle, severe breathlessness, sudden facial drooping, new weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, or sudden vision loss. Arrange routine medical review for a family pattern of early heart or artery disease, visible cholesterol deposits, or a previous abnormal test. A clinician can decide whether further assessment is needed.
