Signs of Early Labour at 34 Weeks Pregnant

At this stage, the uterus may tighten irregularly after activity, but labour contractions tend to become more regular, longer, stronger, or closer together. A heavy feeling in the pelvis, menstrual-like cramps, a persistent backache, a change in discharge, or fluid leaking from the vagina may accompany cervical opening. A mucus plug can come away without labour beginning immediately. These signs cannot be interpreted reliably at home, especially when waters may have ruptured.

Rest, record the timing of tightenings, and call your maternity unit or obstetric team. Tell them about bleeding, fluid, pain, fetal movement, and any history of early delivery or cervical procedures. Bring your pregnancy notes if you attend hospital. Assessment may include monitoring contractions and fetal heart rate, checking the cervix, and testing fluid. Clinicians may discuss an antenatal steroid injection and other treatment according to your symptoms and the baby’s condition.

Call urgently for fluid leakage, regular contractions, vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, or severe abdominal or back pain. Seek emergency help if you feel faint, have heavy bleeding, severe pain, or feel a strong urge to push. Use the maternity unit’s urgent line even if you are uncertain; early assessment helps the team decide whether observation or treatment is needed.
