Signs of brucellosis in dogs

Brucellosis is an infection that can spread between animals and, less commonly, to people. In dogs it may have few obvious signs. Reproductive problems, including failure to conceive, late pregnancy loss, or inflamed testicles, can be clues. Some dogs develop tiredness, enlarged lymph nodes, back or joint discomfort, or recurring fever.

These signs are not specific to brucellosis. Exposure history matters, including contact with breeding animals, reproductive fluids, or an infected dog. A veterinarian should guide testing rather than relying on appearance alone.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if brucellosis is possible. Until advice is given, separate the dog from breeding activity and avoid contact with blood, birth material, or reproductive secretions. Wash hands after handling the dog and keep children away from potentially contaminated areas. A veterinarian may recommend a blood test and discuss long-term management.

Arrange same-day veterinary advice for a dog that is very weak, has repeated fever, severe pain, breathing difficulty, or cannot eat or drink. Contact a doctor if a person exposed to the dog develops fever, night sweats, joint pain, or muscle aches, and mention the animal exposure.

Ask the veterinarian: Could this be brucellosis or another infection? What testing is needed? How should we handle waste and reproductive material? Should other animals or exposed people be assessed? What treatment and follow-up are appropriate?
