What should you know about signs and symptoms of tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, often caused by a viral infection and sometimes by bacteria such as those responsible for strep throat. A sore throat may come with red or enlarged tonsils, white patches, fever, bad breath, headache, earache or tender swollen glands in the neck. These features overlap with other throat infections, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause or decide whether antibiotics are useful.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose cool or soft foods if swallowing hurts. Follow label directions for suitable pain relief and check with a pharmacist if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are severe, keep returning, or do not begin to improve. A clinician may examine the throat and decide whether testing or Antibiotic Treatment is appropriate; antibiotics do not treat viral infections.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, trouble opening the mouth, or rapidly increasing swelling. Get prompt medical advice for dehydration, persistent high fever, marked weakness or symptoms that are worsening. Keep personal items separate and wash hands regularly while an infectious throat illness is possible.

Ask whether the pattern suggests viral tonsillitis or strep throat, whether a throat test is needed, which pain relief is suitable, and when you can return to school or work. Ask what change would require another examination.
