What should you know about siegel otoscope?

The device combines illumination and magnification so a clinician can look through the ear canal at the eardrum. A pneumatic feature may gently vary air pressure, allowing observation of how the eardrum moves. Reduced movement can occur with fluid behind the eardrum, congestion or other middle-ear problems, but the finding must be interpreted alongside symptoms and the rest of the examination.

The examination is not a scan and does not by itself explain every cause of ear pain, reduced hearing or dizziness. Earwax, canal swelling and an unsuitable viewing angle can also affect what is seen.

Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, hearing change, recent infection, ear surgery or a possible eardrum injury. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects into the canal before the visit. A GP consultation may be enough for an initial assessment; a child health consultation can be useful when a child has fever, pulling at the ear, irritability or hearing concerns. The clinician may compare both ears and decide whether further testing is needed.

Arrange prompt assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, pus or blood from the ear, a high fever, swelling behind the ear, new facial weakness or severe dizziness. Seek urgent help after a head injury when there is ear bleeding, clear fluid, confusion or worsening headache. In a child, poor responsiveness, marked lethargy or breathing difficulty needs immediate care.
