Short answer

Side groin pain can arise from an overloaded muscle, hip joint problem, or nearby tissue, so context and examination matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common triggers
Sprinting, kicking, cutting, deep lunges, and hip rotation.
Useful details
Onset, depth of pain, clicking, bulge, fever, and associated symptoms.
Rehabilitation focus
Hip motion, adductor strength, trunk control, and graded loading.

What may be behind it

Pain after sprinting, kicking, changing direction, or a sudden stretch may involve the adductor muscles. Pain that feels deep in the groin, worsens with hip flexion or rotation, or comes with clicking may point to a hip joint source. Hip impingement, a hip labral tear, and hip osteoarthritis are different conditions that can present with groin discomfort, but groin pain does not by itself identify any one of them.

Record whether the pain is sudden or gradual, whether it travels into the thigh, and whether coughing, a bowel movement, or a visible bulge affects it. Fever, urinary symptoms, abdominal pain, or testicular or pelvic symptoms require medical consideration beyond a sports injury.

What to do

Temporarily reduce sprinting, kicking, deep lunges, and side-to-side drills if they reproduce symptoms. Keep gentle walking within comfort and avoid forcing the hip into a painful stretch. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may help after a recent strain; comfortable heat may help stiffness for some people.

Sports physiotherapy can assess hip motion, adductor strength, trunk control, and movement technique, then build a graded return plan. Do not resume full-speed sport simply because pain has eased at rest; the hip and groin must tolerate loading first.

When to seek care

Get prompt care for severe pain after a fall or twist, inability to bear weight, a new groin bulge that is painful or cannot be pushed back, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek urgent help for sudden severe testicular pain, faintness, or severe abdominal symptoms. Arrange assessment when pain persists, recurs with sport, or limits ordinary walking.

Questions for your doctor

Is the source likely the adductor muscles, hip joint, or another area? Which movements should I avoid? Do I need imaging? What strength tests or milestones should guide my return to running and sport?

Questions people ask

Is side groin pain always a pulled muscle?

No. The hip joint and other nearby structures can cause similar pain, so persistent or limiting symptoms deserve an examination.

Can I stretch a painful groin?

Use only gentle, comfortable movement; forceful stretching can aggravate a recent muscle injury.
