Side Effects of Tinea Versicolor

Tinea versicolor develops when a normal skin yeast grows more than usual. It can produce patches on the chest, back, neck, or upper arms, with fine scale that may be easier to see when the skin is stretched. Colour often does not return immediately after treatment because pigment production needs time to normalise. Warm, humid conditions and sweating can encourage recurrence, so a new episode may resemble the first one.

Use the prescribed topical product, medicated shampoo, or oral medicine exactly as directed, and complete the recommended course. Apply products to the areas specified rather than only the most visible patch. Keep skin dry after bathing, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid sharing towels. Do not scrub the scale away or use bleaching products; these can worsen irritation and make colour differences more noticeable.

Arrange a review if the diagnosis is uncertain, the rash is painful, very inflamed, spreading quickly, or not responding to treatment. Contact a clinician for blistering, pus, fever, or a widespread reaction after medicine. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
