Side effects of the tetanus vaccine

The vaccine trains your immune system to recognise tetanus protection, and that activity can create temporary inflammation. Local tenderness may spread slightly around the injection site before settling. Feeling generally unwell can happen alongside aches or a mild temperature. A reaction is not the same as tetanus infection, and the absence of side effects does not mean the vaccine has not worked.

Keep the arm moving gently and use a cool, clean cloth for soreness or swelling. Rest and drink water if you feel tired or feverish. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain or fever medicine is appropriate, especially if you have allergies, take regular medicines, or have a long-term condition. Do not rub or tightly cover the injection site.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, throat or facial swelling, widespread hives, collapse, or sudden severe dizziness after vaccination. Arrange medical advice if the injection site becomes increasingly painful, hot, or swollen, if fever is severe or persistent, or if you develop symptoms that feel out of proportion to a routine vaccine reaction.

Ask which tetanus-containing vaccine was given, what reaction duration is expected for you, and whether your medical history changes the advice. Confirm the plan for future doses and the best contact if symptoms appear after the clinic closes.
