Side effects of rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an immune-driven inflammatory condition. It often affects matching joints on both sides of the body, especially the hands, wrists and feet. Hand swelling, finger stiffness and joint pain can make gripping, typing, dressing or opening containers difficult. Morning joint stiffness may last well beyond waking, and fatigue can affect concentration and activity. Ongoing inflammation may damage joints and, in some people, affect areas outside the joints, including the eyes, lungs, skin or blood vessels. Symptoms can fluctuate, so a quieter day does not replace regular review.

Arrange a clinical review for persistent swelling, stiffness or reduced function. Treatment is planned to control inflammation and prevent joint damage; anti-inflammatory medication may ease pain for some people, but your clinician must consider stomach, kidney, heart and other risks. Use gentle movement, pacing and joint-protection techniques. A physiotherapist or occupational therapist can suggest hand exercises, splints or adaptations for daily tasks.

Seek urgent help for a hot swollen joint with fever, severe sudden weakness, chest pain, new breathlessness or coughing blood. New eye pain or vision changes need prompt assessment. Contact your rheumatology team when a flare is worsening, medicines cause troubling reactions, or swelling is limiting ordinary activities.
