Side effects of fibroadenoma

A fibroadenoma is made of glandular and supportive breast tissue. It often feels smooth, firm, and mobile under the skin, and it may be painless. Hormonal changes can make it feel more tender or alter its size during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or other times of hormonal change. Several breast conditions can feel similar, so touch alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A new lump, or a known lump that changes, deserves an examination.

Note when tenderness occurs, whether the lump changes with your cycle, and whether the skin or nipple looks different. Book a clinical assessment for a new or growing lump. Depending on your age, examination findings, and breast tissue, the clinician may recommend a Breast Ultrasound or another test. A Breast Biopsy may be offered when imaging cannot identify the lump confidently. Many fibroadenomas can be monitored, while removal may be discussed if the lump grows, causes discomfort, or remains concerning.

Seek prompt medical review for rapid enlargement, a hard or fixed area, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, spontaneous bloody discharge, persistent one-sided pain, redness with fever, or swelling in the armpit. These features do not diagnose cancer, but they should not be attributed to a fibroadenoma without assessment. Sudden severe pain and marked swelling also need timely review.
