What should you know about shower gel for dry skin?

Hot water, long showers, vigorous rubbing, and strongly fragranced or harsh cleansers can remove surface oils that help hold water in the skin. Look for a mild, non-perfumed product and use it mainly on areas that need cleansing rather than scrubbing the whole body. Tightness, roughness, flaking, and itch may reflect simple dry skin, but persistent cracking or inflammation can occur with asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis. A shower gel cannot correct every underlying cause.

Use lukewarm water, keep bathing brief, and pat rather than rub when drying. Apply a thick moisturiser or emollient while the skin is still slightly damp; creams and ointments often give more barrier support than a light gel. Avoid exfoliating gloves and products that sting. If a new shower gel causes burning, redness, or itching, stop it and return to a simple routine. Moisturise hands after washing and protect visibly cracked areas from friction.

See a clinician if dryness is widespread, intensely itchy, cracked, bleeding, painful, or interfering with sleep, or if it does not settle with gentle cleansing and regular moisturising. Prompt assessment is sensible when skin becomes hot, swollen, increasingly tender, or develops pus or crusting.
