What should you know about shoulder impingement exercises and stretches?

Short answer
Shoulder impingement exercises should be gentle, gradual, and guided by symptoms rather than forced through sharp pain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Exercise rule
- Use controlled, comfortable movement.
- Progression
- Increase resistance only when symptoms remain settled.
Why exercise may help
Shoulder impingement describes pain linked to shoulder movement, often felt when lifting the arm. Pain when lifting the arm and general shoulder pain can make people protect the joint, which may reduce strength and control. A rehabilitation plan commonly works on comfortable range of motion, shoulder-blade positioning, rotator-cuff strength, and the muscles that support posture. The right exercises depend on irritability, movement limits, work demands, and whether another problem is present. A physiotherapist can check technique and modify the load.
How to approach exercises
Begin with easy pendulum movements or assisted motion if they are comfortable, then progress to controlled shoulder-blade and external-rotation work with light resistance. Keep the neck relaxed and avoid shrugging. Use a slow range that does not produce sharp pain, catching, or increasing symptoms later that day. Reduce repetitions or resistance if symptoms flare, and avoid repeatedly testing the painful arc. Physiotherapy can provide a staged programme. A cortisone injection may be discussed for selected persistent pain, while subacromial decompression is not an automatic next step and requires clinical assessment.
When to seek care
Stop an exercise and seek advice if the shoulder suddenly loses strength, becomes visibly deformed, or develops marked swelling, numbness, or a cold hand. Arrange assessment when pain is persistent, movement is steadily reducing, or home exercise repeatedly worsens symptoms. Urgent care is appropriate after a significant injury or when severe pain prevents ordinary use of the arm.
Questions for your doctor
Which movement pattern is aggravating my shoulder? Which exercises are suitable at my current stage? How should I adjust activity if pain increases later? Would physiotherapy or another treatment be appropriate, and what findings would change the plan?
