Shoulder Clicked and Now Hurts: What It May Mean

Short answer
A shoulder that clicks and then becomes painful should be rested and assessed if the pain persists, movement is limited, or the joint feels unstable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key clue
- Pain beginning immediately after a click is more useful than the sound alone.
- Until assessed
- Avoid painful loading and keep only gentle, comfortable movement.
- Urgent sign
- A visibly displaced shoulder or a cold, numb hand needs urgent care.
What the new pain may mean
The sound may come from a tendon moving over bone, a change in joint pressure, or movement inside the joint. Pain after the click raises more concern for an irritated tendon, strained muscle, cartilage injury, or shoulder instability than a harmless sound alone. A painful shoulder does not identify one diagnosis by itself. A clinician will consider where the pain is, whether it began during lifting or reaching, and whether strength or range of motion changed. What you can do today
Stop the movement that triggered the pain and avoid heavy lifting, forceful stretching, and repeated testing of the click. Keep the elbow and shoulder moving gently within a comfortable range so the joint does not become stiff. A wrapped cold pack may ease recent soreness. Use pain medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow its label or a clinician's advice. Arrange an examination if symptoms do not settle, recur with ordinary activity, or interfere with sleep or work.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care if the shoulder looks out of place, you cannot use the arm, the hand becomes numb or unusually cold, or severe pain followed an injury. Prompt assessment is also sensible when swelling, marked weakness, bruising, or a feeling that the shoulder may slip out develops. Ongoing pain deserves review because treatment depends on the structure involved; shoulder osteoarthritis is one possible joint-related cause, but the symptom pattern needs examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Which movement or structure seems to produce the click? Do I need imaging or physiotherapy? Which activities should I pause, and which exercises are safe? What signs would suggest instability or a tendon injury? When should I return if pain or weakness continues?

Questions people ask
Is a shoulder click followed by pain always a dislocation?
No. A tendon, muscle, cartilage, or joint problem can cause this pattern. A dislocation is more likely to cause obvious deformity, severe pain, and inability to move the arm.
Should I keep exercising through the click?
Do not exercise through pain. Pause the provoking activity and have persistent or recurring symptoms assessed before returning to heavier loading.
